The Shock

“Moran - he’s in gaol - he deserved to be hanged! ”

Yelled Holmes, as his fist to his open palm banged.

“The man is possessed of such devilish skills

That, if he were set free, we should head for the hills. ”

“I could never believe that he would be released -

There are so many people he had left deceased

That he ought to stay locked behind bars in a cage

So nobody falls foul of his devilish rage. ”

“We must check if the man was somehow liberated

Or if he, as I hope, is still incarcerated.

If he’s in, he’ll be harmless, though evil and sly;

If he’s out, then - By Thunder - I’ll want to know why! ”

“You’ll remember, My Friends, it was he who had shot

At me when I escaped from that Reichenbach plot;

He’s a rather dead shot with an air-gun, you see,

But too great a distance allowed me to flee. ”

“He’s a gambler, of sorts, but the odds he will trim

By resorting to cheating a likely victim

Who expects it’s a gentleman dealing the cards

But is really a cheat with some helpful blaggards. ”

“His credentials, impressive, his history, grand,

Meant that gentlemen’s clubs anywhere in the land

Would hold open their doors to admit the man in -

He’d play cards with the best and he’d generally win. ”

“He’d make sure that he lost just enough to convince

Any gambling partner, from high noble prince

To Northumbrian merchant, that he was sincere

And played only for sport in a grand atmosphere. ”

“He’d get some into debt but he’d soften the blow

By extending his credit, and then they would know

That he was a good type, generous to a fault,

And would, thus, find his way into many a vault. ”

“But his evil intentions, his devilish side,

Were found out and, exposure, he could not abide;

To avoid his expulsion for not playing fair,

He murdered the Honourable Ronald Adair. ”

“It was Mrs Adair who would plead for the life

Of this fiend to be spared - opposition was rife

But her pleading succeeded, the sentence to hang

Was commuted to life, to be served with his gang. ”

“She did not see the death of this murderer served

Anyone - and his hanging would leave her unnerved

And unable to grieve for her son as she ought;

So, clemency, unto this mad fiend, she had sought. ”

“Moriarty, in him, had a valuable asset -

He’d hunt with his master like some skilful basset

Who flushes the game from where it is concealed -

Between hound and the master, it’s fate is then sealed. ”

“We must find if he’s still behind bars or at large

Because, if he is free, he is liable to charge

At the ones who have beaten him at his own game -

Though he’s not Moriarty, his evil’s the same. ”

“We’ll drop Mycroft off close to Whitehall and when

He is back in his office we’ll hurry and then

Get Lestrade at the Yard, or someone, to confirm

That Moran, in his prison, continues to squirm. ”

After Mycroft took leave of his friends, a loud shout

From the cabbie was heard as the cab came about

And a
